Mel B took to the press recently in defense of Belafonte, who was involved in a bar fight last week with a patron who allegedly made derogatory comments about Mel. She said, "He was rushing to the defense of a woman - me. He was my defender. So I can't be mad. It's been blown into more than it was." Originally, reports indicated that a man approached Stephen in the bar shouting racial epithets, after which he commented, "I was defending myself. The police came and took him away. Violence is never the answer, but you have to defend yourself." Belafonte had his shirt ripped off during the fight and the other party suffered a gash on the head.
