Browne who was due to retire in July resigned after he failed to prevent a British newspaper publishing details of his private life by former boyfriend Jeff Chevalier. Though he had admitted to the relationship in an earlier closed court case (no press reports had been allowed) , it was revealed that he had lied how he met Chevalier. Browne had said he had met Chevalier whilst out jogging but now admitted that he actually met him via a website. Browne who became the CEO of BP in 1995 and was honoured with a life peerage in 2001 by the British Labour government. However in the last few years BP had received a lot of bad press at the result of the BP Texas City refinery explosion in 2005 and a massive oil spill in Alaska in 2006. 1st May 2007.
