Shoppers outside H&M's flagship store in New York City will get an eyeful on Thursday, when a nearly naked PETA supporter will have her "skin" torn off in protest of the retailer's continued use of leather.

"Every leather item on H&M's racks represents the nightmarish suffering and terrifying death of a sensitive cow," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "PETA is calling on H&M to sell only high-quality vegan leather, not animals' skins."

PETAwhose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to wear"notes that the millions of cows whose skins are turned into leather endure dehorning and castration, often without painkillers. A PETA expos of the world's largest leather processorfrom which H&M has purchased in the pastrevealed that gentle cows and bulls are branded on the face, electroshocked, and beaten. Animal agriculture, which includes the leather industry, is also responsible for 51 percent of all greenhouse-gas emissions.
