Ffion Hague, William Hague, Parliament Photo - London. UK. Former Conservative Party leader William Hague and wife Ffion at the UK premiere of new film 'Amazing Grace' at the Curzon, Mayfair, London. The film tells the story of 18th and 19th century anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce . A British M.P in parliament from 1780 , Wilberforce became involved in the growing campaign against the slave trade . He soon became a powerful advocate against slavery but had to face a hostile parliament where many M.Ps and the aristocracy had become very rich on the proceeds of slavery. However in 1807 the slave trade was finally abolished but it took another 25 years before the institution of slavery itself was abolished in the British Empire - something Wilberforce was able to witness before his death in 1833. 19th March 2007.
