United States President Barack Obama presents the 2010 Citizens Medal to Susan Retik Ger of Needham, Massachusetts in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. In its release to the press, the White House stated "Susan Retik Ger understands the importance of empowering women touched by personal tragedy.  After losing her husband on September 11, 2001, she found cause in educating and training Afghan widows and their children.  Her strength of spirit has healed hearts, fostering mutual understanding and brightening our common future.  Retik Ger receives the Citizens Medal for advancing womens rights and demonstrating the power of Americas ideals." For 40 years, the Presidential Citizens Medal has recognized Americans who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens. This Medal is among the highest honors a President can bestow, and it stands as a token of gratitude to those who represent what is best about this Nation.
