Zoe Saldana was born in New Jersey but her parents were not. Her father was born in Puerto Rico and her mother was born in the Dominican Republic. She grew up in Queens, New York until she was ten years old. After that time she moved back to Puerto Rico with her family. It was there that she began studying ballet.


Zoe continued to learn ballet and once the family returned to the states when she was seventeen, started working for the Faces theater troupe.
